Cell-phone records led police to an engaged couple from Kalamazoo who have been charged with murder in the November death of Brandon Silverlight, police said.

Justin Terpstra Alison Martin.jpgThe two suspects arrested in conjunction with the death of Brandon Silverlight have been identified as 24 year old Justin Andrew Terpstra (Left) and 23 year old Alison Lane Martin (Right), pictured here, both of Kalamazoo. Terpstra and Martin were both arraigned this (Tuesday, Dec. 08, 2009) afternoon in 57th District Court and charged with open murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
ALLEGAN — Cell-phone records led police to an engaged couple from Kalamazoo who have been charged with murder in the November death of Alison Lane Martin’s ex-boyfriend, police said.

Martin, 23, and Justin Andrew Terpstra, 24, were arraigned Tuesday in Allegan County District Court on open murder and conspiracy to commit murder charges, according to the Allegan County Sheriff’s Office. Both are being held without bond and could face up to life in prison, if convicted.

The charges come less than a month after sheriff’s investigators found the burned body of Brandon David Silverlight near his burned vehicle in the 400 block of 74th Street in Casco Township.

Investigators reviewed Silverlight’s cell-phone records and found that he and Martin, who dated more than seven years ago, had contact with each other prior to and on Nov. 14, the day Silverlight was killed, according to sheriff’s Lt. Scott Matice.

Police believe Martin contacted Silverlight to set up a meeting at a South Haven restaurant then lured him to a nearby seasonal trailer park where Terpstra was “laying in wait,” Matice said.

He said Terpstra, who was paroled from prison in June, allegedly used some type of weapon, possibly a stick or board, to strike Silverlight then overpowered him.

Police allege that after the initial assault, the couple took Silverlight to 74th Street, where he was assaulted again before he and his vehicle were set ablaze. Investigators believe the two assaults caused Silverlight’s death and not the intentionally set fire, Matice said.

The lieutenant said Tuesday that police have “some theories” about a motive but he declined to elaborate.

Matice said Silverlight and Martin “kept in communication” with one another but that police do not know the nature of their relationship at the time Silverlight was killed. The two dated before Silverlight met his current wife seven years ago, he said.

Silverlight was a junior at Western Michigan University enrolled part time in the music education program, WMU officials have said.

Michigan Department of Corrections records show Terpstra was paroled in June following a three-year prison term for a home invasion conviction in Kalamazoo County.

The Gazette News Service contributed to this report.

A 19-year-old man who crashed his car during a police pursuit last month near Three Rivers, killing his passenger, died this morning at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, authorities said.

THREE RIVERS — A 19-year-old man who crashed his car during a police pursuit last month near Three Rivers, killing his passenger, died this morning at University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, authorities said.

Kevin Glass, of Three Rivers, had been hospitalized since suffering critical injuries in a Nov. 3 crash that killed Keriann McLain, 19, of Three Rivers.

Meanwhile, St. Joseph County Prosecutor John McDonough said the probe continues into determining who provided the alcohol that investigators believe was a factor in the pursuit and crash.

“This is a shining example of how alcohol, youthfulness and careless driving can create a very tragic outcome,” McDonough said Wednesday in a news release. “It is extremely sad that one poor decision by Mr. Glass ended up killing two young people ... Underage drinking is a problem in our county and those who choose to supply alcohol to minors or a place for minors to consume alcohol will be prosecuted for their actions.”

McLain was ejected from Glass’ 1986 Ford Mustang when it crashed at 11:57 p.m. on Buckhorn Road, northeast of downtown Three Rivers. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Michigan State Police crash investigator said a Three Rivers police officer had tried to stop Glass at Portage Avenue and Walnut Street for having a taillight that was not working properly. Glass fled and police gave chase.

About two miles from where police tried to stop Glass, police said Glass traveled around a curve on Buckhorn near Scott Lane at an excessive speed and lost control. The Mustang ran off the east side of the road and struck a fire hydrant, several tree stumps and boulders.

Police said the Mustang went airborne and was in the air upside down when it struck another tree and came to rest. McLain was not wearing a seatbelt during the crash.

Investigators said Glass was belted.

The state police investigator determined that the Three Rivers officer acted appropriately and was not close enough to Glass at the time of the crash to witness it. McDonough said Wednesday that police couldn’t have done anything to prevent the crash.

A Kalamazoo man who police say pistol-whipped his ex-girlfriend at a Comstock Township apartment complex was charged Wednesday with felony domestic violence, authorities said.

KALAMAZOO — A Kalamazoo man who police say pistol-whipped his ex-girlfriend at a Comstock Township apartment complex was charged Wednesday with felony domestic violence, authorities said.

Troy Thomas Woodard, 29, was arraigned in Kalamazoo County District Court on one count of third-offense domestic violence, a court official said.
Woodard.jpgTroy Thomas Woodard
Kalamazoo County sheriff’s deputies arrested Woodard Tuesday after responding at about 3 p.m. to a report of a shooting at Comstock Village Apartments near Sprinkle Road and East H Avenue.

At the scene, deputies determined there had not been a shooting but a 36-year-old woman had been struck once on the forehead with a handgun, Undersheriff Pali Matyas said.
Matyas said Woodard had fled by the time deputies arrived but was later arrested near Gull and Nazareth roads.

Meanwhile, Matyas said police are searching for another man who, shortly after the incident at the apartment complex, walked into Approved Cash Advance, 5145 Gull Road, and threw a chunk of concrete that struck a 29-year-old clerk in the chest and shoulder.

While their investigation of the two incidents continued Wednesday, Matyas said the clerk at the cash-advance store, a woman, was in a relationship with Woodard and police believe it is a possibility that the man threw the concrete at her in retaliation for Woodard committing the earlier assault.

“We think that’s what might have happened,” Matyas said. “It’s safe to say it appears to be related.”

Both women were treated at Borgess Medical Center and released.

Woodard is scheduled to be back in court Dec. 22 for a hearing on evidence against him in the domestic violence case. A court official had no information Wednesday on whether Woodard was held on bond after his arraignment.

A fourth person alleged to have provided the heroin that Portage teen Amy Bousfield overdosed on in 2008 was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of delivery of a controlled substance causing death.

KALAMAZOO — A fourth person alleged to have provided the heroin that Portage teen Amy Bousfield overdosed on in 2008 was arraigned Wednesday on a charge of delivery of a controlled substance causing death.

Curtiss Odell Thompson, 38, of Kalamazoo, also was arraigned on three other drug-related charges involving cocaine and heroin, according to a news release from the Portage Police Department.

“We believe with this arrest we’ve identified the for-profit drug dealer involved in this death,” Detective Matt Wolfe said. “There is no one else we’re looking for in connection to Amy Bousfield’s death, not at this time.”

Bousfield, an 18-year-old Portage Central High School graduate, died in June 2008 three days after snorting heroin.

Carrie Anne Wickham was acquitted in August of charges related to Bousfield’s death. Court testimony revealed Wickham contacted Joseph Anthony Wheeler to get the heroin Wickham and Bousfield used the night Bousfield overdosed.

Wheeler, 22, pleaded guilty to delivery of a controlled substance causing death and was sentenced in March to one year in prison.

Cristina Marie Dickerson, 28, was charged in November with delivery of a controlled substance causing death. Testimony in Wickham’s trial indicated she was the person who provided the heroin to Wheeler from a dealer. Her next court hearing is scheduled for Dec. 21.

Wolfe said Thompson “is no stranger to law enforcement” and had been paroled from prison in July after serving a sentence on a drug conviction, according to Kalamazoo Gazette records. He was arrested Dec. 3 for absconding from parole.

Portage police worked with the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team to develop the  charges filed against Thompson. In addition to delivery of a controlled substance causing death, which is punishable by up to life in prison, he is charged with possession, delivery and possession with intent to deliver controlled substances. He is being held on a $100,000 bond in the Kalamazoo County Jail.

Victor Demott TuckerVictor Demott Tucker
Victor Demott Tucker, of South Haven, was arraigned Wednesday in Van Buren County District Court on one count each of armed robbery, carjacking and assault with intent to rob as a fourth-time habitual offender, Van Buren County Assistant Prosecutor Cory Johnson said.

Tucker was being held Thursday in the Van Buren County Jail on $250,000 cash/surety bond.

Tucker was released from prison Nov. 27 after serving time for armed robberies committed in 1989 and 1992, and larceny in a building committed in 2005, according to Michigan Department of Corrections records.

South Haven police arrested Tucker after investigating a report of an armed robbery at about 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Little Caesars Pizza, 723 Aylworth Ave., and a 7:47 p.m. report of a carjacking at a nearby business in South Haven Township.

During the incident at Little Caesars, South Haven Acting Police Chief Tom Martin said Tucker jumped the counter and tried to get money from a cash register. Martin said Tucker was not able to get the register open and eventually ran from the business.

A short time later, Martin said Tucker approached a man in a car and told him he was armed with a knife or gun. A gun or knife was never seen and the driver, who was not hurt, apparently drove away with Tucker in the car, Martin said.

Martin said Tucker eventually got out of the car after a short scuffle with the driver.

Police later used a search dog that tracked to an apartment house in the 400 block of Aylworth Avenue where Tucker was found. Martin said police found two guns in the apartment house following Tucker’s arrest.

“What (Tucker) told us was that he was destitute and did not have any money,” Martin said when asked about a motive for the two incidents.

A hearing on evidence against him is scheduled for Dec. 23, a court official said.

Police say a 50-year-old Constantine man is facing charges in both Cass and St. Joseph counties after crashing into a residence in one county and fleeing police in the other.

CONSTANTINE — Police say a 50-year-old Constantine man is facing charges in both Cass and St. Joseph counties after crashing into a residence in one county and fleeing police in the other.

By the time the Saturday-night incident had ended, Michigan State Police troopers say, the suspect had crashed into a house, the homeowner’s car and two trees before he fled on foot.

The suspect’s name has not been released, pending his arraignments, according to a news release issued by the Michigan State Police White Pigeon post.

The incident began just before 10 p.m. in the 60000 block of Wood Lake Street, southeast of Jones, in Cass County. The man crashed a vehicle into a residence there, causing “extensive damage,” the press release said.

The homeowner initially tried to help the driver out of his car, then went to get his own vehicle in an attempt to block the damaged vehicle from leaving the scene, police said. The homeowner was unsuccessful, troopers said, and the suspect fled in his damaged car.

The homeowner then followed the fleeing vehicle and called 911, police said. At one point, police say, the man stopped suddenly, put his vehicle in reverse and “intentionally struck the homeowner’s vehicle,” damaging it before also leaving that scene and heading onto Norton Road, the press release said.

Officers said the suspect’s vehicle then left the road and struck a tree but continued traveling, crossing over into St. Joseph County, where it crashed into a second tree. Police say the driver then fled on foot.

Troopers followed the man through snow, fields and ditches, finally apprehending him in a field.

The man faces charges in Cass County of operating a vehicle while intoxicated, second offense, assault with a dangerous weapon for using his car to cause potential injury and failure to stop after a collision, police said.

In St. Joseph County, he is being charged with operating while intoxicated and failure to report/leaving the scene of a collision, police said.

PORTAGE — The presents a Kalamazoo woman placed under her family Christmas tree this weekend were worth more than $700.

One problem though, Portage police allege the gifts had been purchased with a credit card that the 18-year-old stole from a co-worker.

Police seized the gifts Sunday following a report from an employee at Toys R Us, 6207 S. Westnedge Ave., that her credit card had been stolen while she was working a shift at the store. Officers allege that the footage showed the card had been used at Toys R Us after it was stolen.

Police said the suspect, whose name had not been released early Monday, was employed as a temporary worker at the store. Officers later went to her residence where they seized the merchandise, which had been wrapped and placed under her family’s Christmas tree, according to the news release.

Police said they plan to seek charges against the woman when they submit their investigation for review to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office.

A Gobles man accused of pushing his mother down a stairway in the home they shared pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of manslaughter.

PAW PAW — A Gobles man accused of pushing his mother down a stairway in the home they shared pleaded guilty Monday to a charge of manslaughter.

James P. Bachelder, 52, was originally charged with open murder in the death of Joan Louise Bachelder, 79, who died March 1 from injuries she suffered Feb. 13 at their residence in the 28000 block of South Shore Drive in Gobles. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge before Van Buren County Circuit Judge William C. Buhl, according to court records.

Manslaughter carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 4.

A nurse at Bronson Methodist Hospital, where Joan Bachelder was taken with neck and arm injuries, testified at James Bachelder’s preliminary examination in July that his mother was embarrassed to say her son pushed her down the stairs. Joan Bachelder told at least one doctor she had fallen on her own.

When the nurse pressed her, however, the nurse said Joan Bachelder told her she didn’t want anyone to know he had done it.

James Bachelder has bipolar disorder and had been drinking alcohol before the incident, the nurse said she was told by Bachelder’s mother.

James Bachelder entered the plead the day before his trial for murder was to begin.

Ex-sewer chief who falsified records jailed for faking community service

When his failure to do his job polluted a river with sewage, a wastewater treatment plant superintendent was sentenced in court last spring to perform community service to pay for his crime.

HARTFORD — When his failure to do his job polluted a river with sewage, a wastewater treatment plant superintendent was sentenced in court last spring to perform community service to pay for his crime.

When he faked that, too, he got jail time.

Thomas Melville was sentenced to serve 320 hours of community service for falsifying work records required by state environmental laws. He turned in paperwork showing he served the bulk of that sentence in May, doing odd jobs at the American Legion post in Hartford where he had once served as commander.

Last month, Melville was sentenced in Berrien County Circuit Court to seven days in jail for falsifying those records of his own community service hours.

Cindy Ehrenberg, court referral coordinator for Berrien County, said that the former head of treatment plants in Hartford and Coloma also will have to perform 200 hours of community service work, this time properly channeled through her office.

Melville has until June 1, 2010, to complete that work, the court ordered.

Melville earned a combined income of $100,000 a year as superintendent of the two wastewater-treatment plants, which he ran from 2002 to 2007. During that period, local health departments reported no illnesses that were attributed to the discharge in the river, officials have said.

He is no longer a wastewater-treatment operator. State investigators charged that he falsified reports of laboratory work that was never done and polluted the Paw Paw River with improperly treated human sewage — perhaps every day for years.

Melville pleaded guilty in circuit courts in Van Buren and Berrien counties to two felony environmental violation charges in connection with his actions at both plants. In total, he was ordered to pay fines and costs of about $6,000 and to complete community service.

“He had an officer (at the American Legion ) sign off on the hours,” said Detective Sgt. Bill Ford, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality investigator who helped uncover the problems at the wastewater plants.

The man signed blank cards that were later filled in by Melville, Ford said.

Ehrenberg said Melville was familiar with the paperwork because he had often supervised community service workers at the post when he was commander there.

Melville declined to comment when contacted by the Gazette.

Ford said he is satisfied with the outcome of the  contempt charges.

“He  spent seven days in the Berrien County jail. I think it sends a clear message to people sentenced to community service, if they don’t do the service assigned to then they’ll do jail time,” Ford said.

UPDATE:

KALAMAZOO -- Police have identified the victims of this morning's double homicide as Tamika Morris, 27, of Kalamazoo, and Corey Darnell Johnson, 29, of Kalamazoo.

Morris and Johnson lived together in the apartment at Interfaith Homes where they were shot at 2:55 a.m. today, Detective Lt. Victor Ledbetter said at a brief press conference this afternoon.

Their 9-year-old daughter, who was home at the time, was not harmed, Ledbetter said.

The girl is now staying with relatives.

Police are continuing to search for a Chicago man, 30-year-old Christopher L. White, whom they have identified as a suspect.

Ledbetter said White was an acquaintance of the couple.

White is considered armed and dangerous, according a press release from the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety.

White recently moved to Kalamazoo from Chicago, police said.

Police have not confirmed a motive in the shooting, Ledbetter said.

EARLIER (2:15 p.m.):

KALAMAZOO —
A Chicago man has been identified by police as the suspect in the fatal shootings of a man and woman early Wednesday at a Kalamazoo apartment complex.

Christopher L. White, 30, is still being sought by Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety investigators, Assistant Chief Brian Uridge said.

Uridge said White was an acquaintance of a 27-year-old woman and 29-year-old man who were killed in a 2:55 a.m. shooting at Interfaith Homes, off Woodward Avenue.

Police believe they know the motive for the double slaying, but Uridge declined to release any details Wednesday afternoon.

KALAMAZOO —
Police searched a recreational trailer on the city’s north side Wednesday as they continued trying to track down a suspect in a double homicide at a Kalamazoo apartment complex.

Members of the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety SWAT Team went into the Coachmen recreational vehicle in the 800 block of West North Street shortly after 11 a.m. The suspect was not found, Detective Lt. Victor Ledbetter said.

Homicide mapView full sizeLedbetter said police plan to hold a press conference this afternoon about the double homicide and police’s search for the suspect.

The names of the two victims, who were shot, have not been released.

The search of the trailer came eight hours after Public Safety officers responded to an apartment at Interfaith Homes, off Woodward Avenue, on a report of a shooting.

At the scene, a 27-year-old woman was pronounced dead and a 29-year-old man found at the residence died later at Bronson Methodist Hospital.

Ledbetter said a 9-year-old girl who was in the apartment during the fatal shootings was not injured.

Ledbetter said police cordoned off the area on West North Street between Woodward and Cobb avenues after receiving information that the suspect in the double homicide was in the area.

He said prior to entering the trailer, police had found footprints in the snow leading up to it.
“We believe that he was in the area,” the lieutenant said. “We’ve got to go back and regroup.”

Public Safety officers combed the block between Cob and Woodward to apprehend a possible suspect in the double homicide that occurred at Kalamazoo's Interfaith Homes.Ledbetter said police are “fairly certain” who the suspect in the shooting is, but declined Wednesday afternoon to identify him.

He did say the suspect is a black male who was last seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, black pants and an orange jacket or vest.

As their investigation continues, police are trying to pinpoint a motive for the shootings. Ledbetter said police also were continuing to search for the gun.

At the scene of the shooting Wednesday morning, Public Safety’s crime lab was combing a second-floor apartment in Building 1031.

The staircase leading up to the apartment was blocked by crime-scene tape early Wednesday.
Along with the crime-scene tape was red and silver garland and red Christmas lights that were still lit.

Morris was pronounced dead at the scene and Johnson died later at Bronson Methodist Hospital. Police said the couple’s 9-year-old daughter, who was inside the apartment at the time of the incident, was not hurt and is now staying with other family members.

Public Safety Capt. Julie Parsons said police hope to submit their investigation for review Thursday to the Kalamazoo County Prosecutor’s Office and seek charges against White of open murder and felony firearm.

The manhunt for White, who is considered to be armed and dangerous, was continuing Thursday morning.

“It’s very likely he has made it to Chicago but we’re still working every lead that we’ve gotten,” the captain said. “That’s where the majority of his family is.”

Parsons said White moved to Kalamazoo from Chicago about two months ago and had been staying with family in the 900 block of Princeton Avenue. Police have described Johnson, Morris and White as acquaintances and Parsons said Thursday that Morris and White grew up together in Chicago.
